Dr. Lalji Singh (1947-2017), known as the 'Father of Indian DNA fingerprinting', was a pioneering Indian scientist whose groundbreaking work in genetics and forensic science revolutionized crime investigation and human identification in India. His contributions to molecular biology, genomics, and wildlife conservation have left an indelible mark on science and society.
Dr. Singh's most notable achievement was the development and implementation of DNA fingerprinting technology in India, which transformed forensic science and criminal investigations. He established the first DNA fingerprinting laboratory in India at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad, enabling accurate identification of individuals based on their unique genetic profiles.
Beyond forensics, Dr. Singh made significant contributions to genomics research, including sequencing the genome of the Indian buffalo and studying genetic diversity in various species. His work extended to wildlife conservation, where he applied genetic techniques to combat poaching and illegal wildlife trade.

Background and Rationale
South Asia’s genetic diversity, shaped by migrations, admixtures, and endogamy, as evidenced in studies like “The Role of South Asia in Peopling of the Old World” (2025), offers a unique opportunity for genomic research. Dr. Lalji Singh’s groundbreaking DNA fingerprinting work established India’s forensic genetics leadership, but there is a critical need for integrated centres addressing genomics, forensics, and disease screening. The increasing prevalence of infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19) and lifestyle diseases (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and MYBPC3-linked cardiomyopathy, prevalent in South Asians) highlights the urgency of advanced genomic screening. The Lalji Singh Research Centre in Kalwari, Jaunpur, is strategically positioned to lead this effort, building on BHU’s legacy and Dr. Singh’s contributions, to advance India’s role in global genomic, forensic, and health research.
